Metis is now $19.99, permanently.
Metis costs $19.99 instead of $29.99, on the Mac and on the App Store. It is still one payment, still covers your Mac, iPhone and iPad, and still has no subscription anywhere in it.
This is a price change, not a promotion. There is no countdown and no code to enter. The old number is simply gone.
The price should describe the app you have
When Metis reached 2.0 we priced it next to our other paid app, which is a much older and much broader piece of software. That was a decision about where we hoped Metis would be, and a price is a poor place to keep a hope. It is read by someone who has the app in front of them today.
Metis today is a focused, local-first Markdown knowledge base: a live-preview editor over plain .md files you own, backlinks and a graph, typed properties, on-device AI, and git history on the Mac. That is a real app and worth paying for. It is not a decade-old toolkit, and pricing it as though it were asks the reader to take a position on our roadmap before they have opened it once.
A lower permanent price beats a discount
The easy version of this decision is a sale. Sales work, briefly, and they teach people a lesson we do not want taught: that the listed price is not the real one, and the correct move is to wait for the next email. We would rather the number on the page be the number, every day, and be a number we are willing to defend.
It also makes the comparison we actually care about honest. Most note apps of this shape are billed yearly. A one-time price only means something if it stays put long enough to be worth less than a second year of a subscription.
What does not change
- Nothing about the app. No feature moved behind a higher tier, because there is no higher tier. Lowering a price by quietly removing something from it is the version of this we did not do.
- One purchase, three devices. Mac, iPhone and iPad, on the same one-time payment, with the 7-day free trial unchanged.
- Your files stay yours. Plain
.mdin a folder you chose. No account required to use the app, no tracking, no cloud lock-in. - Everyone who already owns Metis keeps it. The price moved in place. We did not start a new version to sell you, your licence is untouched, and there is nothing to re-buy.
The part we will not pretend about
We are a small shop and Metis is young. We do not have enough sales history to tell you that $19.99 converts better than $29.99, and if we published a chart implying we did, it would be decoration. This is a judgement about what the app is worth to someone opening it today, made in public, and we will find out along with you.
What we can promise is the boring part: if it changes again, we will say so plainly, in a post like this one, with the reason attached.
